Founded in 2014 by Melonee Wise, Fetch Robotics was an early pioneer in the autonomous mobile robot (AMR) market. As a frontrunner, it helped establish key standards for logistics and warehouse automation.
Zebra Technologies then acquired the company for $291 million in July 2021. Having already owned a 5% stake through an earlier investment, Zebra purchased the remaining 95%. Wise later departed Zebra to serve as CTO at Agility Robotics and is now Chief Product Officer at Kuka Robotics.
In a surprising turn, Zebra announced in December 2025 that it was winding down its Fetch robotics division.
What remains unclear and undisclosed in the Skild acquisition is how many employees were still with the Fetch division after last December's closure announcement. A significant loss of talent has likely occurred since then.
"Zebra Technologies has decided to explore strategic options for our robotics automation business," the company stated in a December email to The Robot Report. "This allows us to sharpen our focus on digitizing and automating frontline workflows and on key growth investments. Long-term, we remain committed to providing solutions that boost productivity, optimize inventory, and enhance service for consumers and patients across the industries we serve."
