Shanghai Man Jailed for Extortion Using AI-Forged Medical Records

While the law will eventually catch up, using artificial intelligence for illicit activities can temporarily evade consequences. A recent case cracked by Shanghai police exemplifies a new type of crime: a man exploited AI to forge medical records and invoices, launching fraudulent compensation claims against multiple restaurants. This incident serves as both a warning against technological misuse and a stark example of how the AI black market is creeping into everyday life.
From "Magic Brush Ma Liang" to "Serial Litigant": How AI Fabricates Convincing Documentation
The case unfolded when a restaurant in Shanghai's Yangpu district received a consumer complaint. A man alleged he suffered "food poisoning" after eating there and promptly supplied detailed hospital records and medical invoices, demanding 2,000 yuan in compensation.
The restaurant owner initially paid to resolve the issue quietly but later discovered other businesses facing identical situations. A police investigation uncovered the scam. The man had no actual medical history; instead, he gathered authentic medical records shared online by others and used AI image-editing tools to meticulously alter them, producing a convincing set of fake documents.
After his first successful AI-forged compensation claim in November last year, the man saw this as a "quick money scheme." Within a month, he targeted four different restaurants. Growing bolder, he demanded increasingly higher amounts each time. By the time he was caught, he had illegally profited 2,500 yuan. The police have now taken criminal compulsory measures against him.
