Samsung Returns to PC Chip Market, Sends AI Chip GAIA to Lenovo, HP for Testing, Mass Production in 2027

Samsung Electronics is stepping up its efforts in the AI PC chip market, with its in-house accelerator processor, codenamed "GAIA," slated for mass production in 2027. Developed by the System LSI division within Samsung's Device Solutions business unit, the chip has already produced prototype samples that have been shipped to leading PC makers like Lenovo and HP for testing, marking the start of the performance verification phase.
GAIA is built on a 4nm process, with its core architecture revolving around a Neural Processing Unit (NPU). Unlike conventional CPUs and GPUs, this chip is designed to accelerate generative AI workloads. Samsung is also exploring how GAIA can work alongside Processing-In-Memory (PIM) technology—PIM enables data computation directly inside storage devices, cutting latency and power consumption from data transfers, a key factor for optimizing energy efficiency in edge AI scenarios.
In addition to PC chips, GAIA also targets the robotics market.
In terms of application positioning, GAIA's ambitions extend beyond edge AI computing on PCs to include physical AI markets like robotics. On the power efficiency front, Samsung is focusing on optimizing performance per watt, though specific performance metrics, interface specifications, and adaptation plans for existing PC platforms have not yet been disclosed.
This is not Samsung's first foray into PC processors. In 2012, the company developed Exynos application processors for Chromebooks, but the business was discontinued two years later. Today, AI PCs have emerged as the next competitive battleground in semiconductors after data centers, with players like NVIDIA, Qualcomm, and Huawei already in the game. If the project stays on schedule, Samsung will begin mass production of GAIA in 2027, adding another major contender to the AI PC chip race.
