Orton Dismisses Claim That AI Drives Layoffs, Says Embracing Tech Boosts Hiring

Contrary to the prevailing belief that AI adoption leads to workforce reductions, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has publicly challenged this narrative. He argues that the actual trend shows companies heavily investing in AI are simultaneously making the largest investments in hiring.
AI is often a pretext for layoffs
Altman suggests that when companies cite AI as the reason for cutting staff, it is frequently a convenient justification rather than the root cause. In his view, organizations that loudly blame AI for job cuts are typically the slowest to adopt the technology and have integrated it the least.
While acknowledging he cannot predict exactly how AI will reshape employment long-term, Altman notes increased optimism after observing widespread adoption of OpenAI’s coding tools across various industries.
Model capabilities for complex tasks are overstated
Reflecting on earlier assessments, Altman admits he previously underestimated the uneven nature of AI capabilities. He explains that while current models excel at specific, isolated tasks, they struggle significantly with complex, long-term project management.
Altman also expressed regret over past OpenAI press releases, such as the GPT-5.2 announcement claiming the model "outperformed professionals in 44 occupations." He now believes this wording unnecessarily fueled public anxiety about unemployment, noting that a more accurate description would have been "outperforming professionals in small tasks within those 44 fields."
