Musk Reveals Tesla's Dojo Supercomputer Aims for Space AI

During the long weekend, Elon Musk announced that Tesla intends to revive development of Dojo3, the company's previously shelved third-generation AI chip. This time, however, its purpose has shifted; Musk stated Dojo3 will not be used for training terrestrial self-driving models, but will instead be dedicated to "space-based AI compute."
This reversal comes five months after Tesla effectively wound down its Dojo project. The supercomputer team was disbanded following the departure of lead Peter Bannon. Approximately 20 staff members subsequently left to join DensityAI, an AI infrastructure startup founded by former Dojo head Ganesh Venkataramanan and other ex-Tesla employees.
When Dojo was shut down, reports indicated Tesla planned to rely more heavily on partners like Nvidia and AMD for computing power and Samsung for chip manufacturing, moving away from in-house silicon development. Musk's latest remarks signal another strategic pivot.
The billionaire executive and Republican megadonor explained on X that the decision to resurrect Dojo was influenced by the progress of Tesla's internal chip roadmap, noting the AI5 chip design is currently "in good shape."
Tesla's TSMC-made AI5 chip was designed for the company's automated driving systems and Optimus humanoid robots. Last summer, Tesla secured a $16.5 billion deal with Samsung to produce its next-generation AI6 chips, intended for vehicles, robots, and high-performance data center training.
"AI7/Dojo3 will be for space-based AI compute," Musk stated on Sunday, framing the revived initiative as an ambitious long-term venture.
To pursue this goal, Tesla is now reassembling the team it dissolved months ago. Musk used his post to issue a direct call for engineering talent, writing: "If you're interested in working on what will be the highest volume chips in the world, send a note to [email protected] with 3 bullet points on the toughest technical problems you've solved."
