Mothers Embrace AI as Parenting Assistant, 85% Consult AI Before Doctor
On March 19, the China Obstetrics and Gynecology Network, in collaboration with Chuntian Women and Children, released a nationwide survey of over 500 mothers. The findings reveal that AI has emerged as a primary source for mothers seeking health information. Over 80% of mothers now typically consult AI first before deciding to visit a doctor. Furthermore, 79% believe that AI can effectively address many everyday minor health queries, thereby reducing unnecessary hospital visits.
The survey identified the top three channels mothers turn to for health concerns: hospitals, AI assistants, and online consultation platforms. Notably, more than 90% of mothers have used AI for health-related questions, with over 40% consulting an AI at least weekly. Among the tools used, Ant Afu is the most popular specialized health AI, while Dou Bao and DeepSeek are the most frequently used general-purpose AI models. For complex medical issues like disease analysis and medication guidance, nearly 40% of mothers expressed greater trust in professional health AIs like Ant Afu.
Mothers provided measured and practical assessments of AI's medical capabilities. Over 40% feel current AI, while not yet matching doctors, is a reliable reference. Another 20% believe AI's advice is approaching physician-level quality, giving them confidence to use it for minor concerns. To ensure they correctly understand medical advice, 70% of mothers cross-check information with AI even after a doctor's visit.
Beyond medical support, AI's emotional value is also acknowledged. More than 70% of mothers agree that AI helps alleviate parenting-related anxiety. Additionally, 50% report that AI guidance has helped them avoid unnecessary spending on overhyped "smart" parenting products.
