Meta's Llama Models Reach 1 Billion Downloads, Zuckerberg Announces

In a quick post on Threads Tuesday morning, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that their "open" AI model family, Llama, reached a whopping 1 billion downloads. That's a big jump from the 650 million downloads they had back in early December 2024, showing a growth of about 53% in just three months.
Llama is the brains behind Meta AI, the assistant you find across Meta's platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. It's all part of Meta's plan to build a broad AI ecosystem. They offer the models and the tools to tweak and customize them for free, but under a proprietary license that's got some strings attached.
Despite some grumbling about the license terms, which can be a bit tough on commercial use, Llama has really taken off since its 2023 launch. Big names like Spotify, AT&T, and DoorDash are using Llama models in their operations right now.
But it's not all smooth sailing for Meta. They're in the middle of a legal battle over Llama, with accusations that they used copyrighted e-books to train the models without asking. Plus, some EU countries have put the brakes on Llama's rollout due to privacy worries. And let's not forget, Llama's been outpaced by other models like DeepSeek's R1 from a Chinese AI lab.
In response, Meta's been working hard, setting up "war rooms" to catch up with DeepSeek's tech and planning to drop a cool $80 billion on AI projects this year.
Looking ahead, Meta's got plans to roll out more Llama models in the coming months. They're talking about "reasoning" models similar to OpenAI's o3-mini, models that can handle multiple types of data at once, and even some with "agentic" features that can do things on their own.
Zuckerberg's pretty optimistic, saying during Meta's Q4 2024 earnings call in January, "I think this very well could be the year when Llama and open source become the most advanced and widely used AI models. Our goal for Llama this year is to lead."
We'll get more details at LlamaCon, Meta's first generative AI developer conference, happening on April 29.
