Meta Layoff Plan Hits Roadblocks as Internal OT Project Initially Aimed to Cut 60% of Teams
Meta originally intended to overhaul its workforce using artificial intelligence, but the initiative was scrapped after AI tools underperformed, staff resistance mounted, and morale plummeted. Internal records show the "OT Project" aimed to build an AI-driven structure, potentially cutting 60% of roles while relying on a lean team of experts to manage virtual workers.

Initially, Meta scheduled the first round of cuts for May and a second for November. However, Mark Zuckerberg halted the process just hours before the first layoffs began. The reversal was driven by disappointing AI productivity gains and employee fears that tracking software was being used to train AI systems designed to replace them.
Reports indicate that staff expressed strong dissent on internal platforms, with some offices displaying satirical posters criticizing AI initiatives. Employee sentiment scores dropped from 74% to 55%, and Zuckerberg acknowledged in July that intelligent agent development had fallen short of projections.
This situation highlights the difficulties of moving AI from experimental phases to large-scale deployment, involving technical reliability, management complexities, and workforce acceptance. Tech firms must now balance human-machine collaboration with efficiency gains to successfully integrate AI.
