Preventing "Model Distillation" by Competitors
An internal document, issued in May and still in effect, reveals Meta's main concern: engineers might accidentally trigger "distillation behavior" while using third-party tools for coding. This refers to using a competitor's model outputs to reverse-train Meta's own models—an ethically sensitive practice that also violates the user agreements of Claude and Codex.
To mitigate legal risks, Meta has instructed its technical teams to immediately stop high-risk tasks that rely on these models. Internally, the company warned that if competitor AI outputs infiltrate Meta's training data, it could spark serious legal disputes with partners and potentially escalate further.
