India’s Airbound launches rocket-shaped drone, challenging trucks on freight costs

Indian autonomous drone startup Airbound has secured $37 million in Series A funding, with the goal of reducing drone air freight costs to match those of road trucks. The three-year-old company has now raised nearly $50 million in total funding, less than a year after its $8.65 million seed round.
Tail-first design, lightweight for cargo
Founder Pusp’s core concept is to develop vertical takeoff and landing drones that weigh less than their payload. The current TRT model weighs approximately 1.5kg and carries 1kg, while the next generation will weigh 3kg with a maximum payload of 5kg. Using a tail-first design similar to rockets, the drone takes off vertically, transitions to horizontal flight, lands, and returns to an upright position, eliminating the need for runways.
Airbound has completed over 13,000 autonomous flights in Bangalore and other locations. The next phase involves building a delivery network across three cities in Andhra Pradesh, aiming for 10,000 flights daily to serve retail, e-commerce, and healthcare sectors. Pusp envisions the company as the "Boeing of drones," providing services for others rather than operating its own shipping. However, regulatory hurdles have made monetization difficult, and the team of over 150 employees currently generates almost no revenue. While the technology to challenge trucks with drones has taken off, the business model still needs to be realized.
