Changchun Film Festival bridges literature and film with AIGC

On August 24, the "New Forces of Chinese Literature" event took center stage at the 21st Changchun Film Festival, bringing together celebrated authors, rising filmmakers, and industry experts to explore the synergistic relationship between literature and cinema.
The ceremony featured several key initiatives, including the signing of a strategic partnership for digitizing literary IP and transforming Changying IP through AIGC. The event also launched the "AI Shang Jilin" original literary works campaign and unveiled the 2026 "Most Transformable Literary IP List for Jilin Mid-career Writers." Fifteen standout titles, such as the novel "Apple Pear," the reportage "Wang Xixi: No Regrets in Building Space Rockets," and the web novel "There's a Demon Across the River," were recognized for their adaptation potential.
Qi Huadong, Vice Chairman of the China Writers Association, highlighted that China's literary landscape has evolved well beyond traditional print and elite circles. He noted the vibrant growth of online literature, amateur writing, non-fiction, genre fiction, and science fiction, alongside the rise of new media formats like short videos, micro-dramas, and audiobooks, which are expanding literature's reach into broader social spheres.
Emphasizing the need to balance diverse writing ecosystems with high literary standards, Qi called for combining professional and mass creative efforts. By breaking down media barriers, literature can integrate more openly with film, gaming, animation, and theater, unlocking deeper spiritual resonance.
Industry data underscores the market power of literature-film integration. In 2025, 59% of the top 100 critically acclaimed and popular TV series were adapted from literary works. Furthermore, the Chinese online literary IP adaptation market reached 367.61 billion yuan in 2025, reflecting a year-on-year growth of 23.13%.
This year's festival prioritized young creative talent, offering a premier platform for emerging works. The "Golden Deer Debut Award" received 36 film submissions, while the "Golden Deer Venture" program conducted nationwide talent scouting. Collaborations with universities also facilitated activities like the "University Student Short Film Creation Collection and Exhibition."
Qi Huadong concluded that initiatives like "New Forces of Chinese Literature" create vital dialogue spaces for creators. These efforts will foster deeper collaboration in topic planning, content creation, IP development, and talent exchange, ultimately producing cultural works that achieve both contemporary relevance and artistic excellence.
