India shifts from app downloads to monetization as locals begin paying for digital services
India once stood as the globe’s top app download hub yet struggled to generate revenue. That dynamic is shifting as users increasingly invest in AI, entertainment, and premium digital services.
Consumer spending on mobile apps in India hit a record $345 million in the second quarter, marking a 35% year-over-year increase, according to Sensor Tower. The intelligence firm noted that growth is now fueled by generative AI, streaming, and productivity tools, reflecting a growing willingness among Indian users to pay for digital subscriptions rather than relying on gaming.
This record quarter follows a broader trend of improving app monetization. Revenue per download has more than doubled over the last three and a half years, while quarterly downloads have stabilized around 6.3 billion since 2023.
“India is now a rapidly evolving mobile market characterized by a massive user base and increasing readiness to pay for digital services,” said Eve Chen, an insights analyst at Sensor Tower.
Chen pointed to the widespread adoption of digital payment systems, such as India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and digital wallets, which have streamlined in-app purchases. This infrastructure, combined with greater acceptance of app subscriptions and premium services, has driven the change.
India’s performance stands out globally. The country recorded its fastest app revenue growth in Q2 among major markets, exceeding $200 million in quarterly consumer spending. By comparison, Mexico grew by 30% and Turkey by 25%, while U.S. app revenue actually dropped by 3% during the same period.
“These numbers indicate that India is transitioning from being the largest market by downloads to one of the fastest-growing regions for app monetization,” Chen explained.
India still lags significantly behind more mature markets. Revenue per download remains around $4.60 in the U.S., $3.90 in South Korea, and $6.10 in Japan, compared to a fraction of those figures in India. However, Chen emphasized that the upward trajectory is more important than current absolute levels, signaling substantial potential for long-term growth.
Generative AI has become one of the fastest-growing segments. Data from Sensor Tower shows that OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude together accounted for nearly 83% of India’s AI app revenue in Q2.
Growth is also being driven by non-gaming applications. Sensor Tower reported that non-gaming categories made up 68% of India’s mobile app revenue in the first half of 2026, up from 58% three years prior.
Global subscription apps continue to benefit from rising spending in India, with Google One emerging as the highest-grossing mobile app for the quarter. Streaming services like Amazon Prime Video, Crunchyroll, Sony LIV, and JioHotstar also saw increased consumer spending. Notably, gaming revenue rose by 3.7% from the previous quarter, defying a global decline.

App intelligence firm Appfigures also anticipates continued growth in India’s subscription market, though the pace has slowed after an AI-driven surge over the past two years. While subscription revenue is still climbing, the initial hype around AI has cooled, according to Ariel Michaeli, founder and CEO of Appfigures.
“The figures remain staggering,” Michaeli noted. Appfigures estimates that ChatGPT generates approximately $60,000 daily in India, with around 1.8 million downloads in the past month. This represents a decline from roughly $80,000 per day observed last October.
