Google tests AI-driven gaming platform
Game creation barriers are falling fast as AI opens development to those without coding, design, or art backgrounds. Google Labs recently demonstrated this with a new experiment.
On Wednesday, Google’s experimental platform launched Playground, an AI-driven tool that lets users build browser games using simple text prompts, removing the need for technical expertise.
Users can pick a genre like trivia or racing, or start from scratch. They can choose 2D or 3D visuals and single-player or multiplayer modes, then describe the mechanics and art style. Playground also lets users upload images, which AI converts into game assets matching the chosen style.
Created games work on mobile and desktop. Projects stay private, shareable via link, or publishable to Playground’s Explore gallery. Published games can feature leaderboards, and creators can keep updating them after release.

Google plans to integrate Unity Spark in a future update. This will give users access to advanced 3D tools and professional-grade mechanics, expanding what’s possible on the platform.
Playground is currently available to U.S. users aged 18+, with global expansion planned. Browsing and playing are free, but generating games uses a weekly token system. Free users get limited tokens, while Google One AI subscribers enjoy higher limits.
Playground joins a growing market of AI game tools. Roblox launched its Build feature in July, allowing game creation through natural language prompts.
This move aligns with Google’s broader gaming strategy. After exploring cloud gaming with Stadia in 2022, Google has integrated games into other platforms, including YouTube Playables, a hub for instant web-based gaming.
