Google Launches Dedicated AI-Powered Coding Tool for UI Design

Google has just unveiled a groundbreaking generative AI tool called "Stitch," which aims to revolutionize the way developers approach UI design. Available through Google Labs, this experiment is powered by Gemini 2.5 Pro and promises to transform vague ideas into polished, app-ready designs within mere minutes. During Google's I/O event, the company emphasized how Stitch eliminates the tedious process of manually crafting individual design elements and coding around them, offering developers a shortcut to efficiency.
With Stitch, developers can input text-based descriptions and even upload visual references to guide the design process. Themes, color schemes, and desired user experiences can all be specified using simple language—currently supported in English. For example, developers can upload wireframes, rough sketches, or screenshots of existing UIs to ensure the final output aligns with their vision.
One standout feature is Stitch’s ability to produce multiple variations of a single design, allowing teams to explore diverse styles and layouts effortlessly. Each iteration comes paired with fully functional front-end code, making it easy to integrate directly into applications or export to platforms like Figma for further refinement. This export capability makes sense given Figma's established role in the design world, where it excels at collaborative editing and system integration.
However, the introduction of Stitch raises intriguing questions about its impact on tools like Figma's Make UI building app, which was recently announced. While Stitch seems designed to complement these tools rather than compete head-on, Google might also be looking to retain developers who previously relied on Gemini's Code Assist feature. By offering a seamless workflow from concept to code, Stitch positions itself as a potential game-changer in the development landscape.
