Google IO 2026 unveils voice interaction with Gmail inbox
Google continues to integrate AI into your inbox. At the IO 2026 developer conference on Tuesday, the company expanded its Gmail "AI Inbox" feature with conversational AI, allowing users to ask questions about their inbox content rather than relying solely on search terms.
According to Google, this Gemini AI-powered tool, named Gmail Live, helps users quickly locate information buried in their inbox.

For example, you might need details about an upcoming flight, a dentist appointment time, an Airbnb door code, or information about a school event.
Previously, users had to type keywords, email addresses, or domain names into the search box to narrow down results. This approach often fails when search terms appear in multiple messages, making it difficult to locate specific emails.
Devanshi Bhandari, Gmail product lead, explained during a pre-I/O briefing, "Gmail Live can answer naturally phrased questions, follow up on queries, and adapt if interrupted."
This is another example of Google demonstrating how its AI can bring tangible improvements to widely used products, especially as non-tech audiences question AI's value amid new data center construction and rising energy costs.
Highlighting a simple yet universal pain point — the difficulty of finding lost emails — provides a practical and positive AI use case. At least, that's Google's hope.
Bhandari showed Gmail Live to reporters, asking about a child's show-and-tell project, a class trip, and hotel and flight details for a Detroit trip. Like using a standalone chatbot such as Gemini or ChatGPT, users can ask questions aloud in natural language, and the AI responds.
Bhandari noted that during the demo, Gmail Live distinguished between "field trip" and "trip" and seamlessly shifted between topics. The AI also extracts granular details like hotel room numbers and infers which individuals users are referring to, even without explicit names.
The company noted that similar voice capabilities are coming to Google Keep, its to-do list app.
Notably, Gmail Live doesn't replace traditional Gmail search; it's simply an additional option.
Google may have learned from its experience with Google Photos, where an AI-powered search upgrade faced backlash and was later made optional. The company seems cautious about forcing AI-only experiences.
Gmail is also adding features like ready-to-send drafts, instant file access, and the ability to mark individual tasks as complete in to-do lists.

Additionally, the AI Inbox experience, launched earlier this year, is expanding from Google AI Ultra subscribers to include Pro and Plus subscribers. It provides an overview of tasks and items buried in your inbox on a single page.
The voice-powered Gmail Live feature will roll out later this summer, initially limited to Google AI Ultra subscribers.
