Google Adopts Anthropic Standard for AI Model Data Connectivity
Just weeks after OpenAI announced it would adopt rival Anthropic's protocol for connecting AI models to data systems, Google is doing the same.
In a Wednesday post on X, Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis stated that Google will add support for Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol (MCP) to its Gemini models and SDK, though he did not specify a timeline for implementation.
"MCP is an effective protocol and is quickly emerging as an open standard for the era of AI agents," Hassabis wrote. "We look forward to collaborating with the MCP team and industry partners to advance its development."
MCP allows AI models to retrieve data from business tools, software, content repositories, and development environments to perform tasks. The protocol facilitates the creation of two-way connections between data sources and AI-powered applications like chatbots.
Developers can make data available via "MCP servers" and create "MCP clients"—such as apps and workflows—that connect to these servers on demand. Since Anthropic open-sourced MCP, companies like Block, Apollo, Replit, Codeium, and Sourcegraph have integrated support for the protocol into their platforms.
