Google's Pixel 10 Series Marks Major AI Smartphone Commitment
With the introduction of its new Pixel 10 series, Google is moving ahead of Apple to bring consumers smartphones enhanced by artificial intelligence. Unveiled during Wednesday's "Made by Google" livestream, these devices arrive just weeks before Apple's anticipated iPhone 17 announcement, which is expected to focus on predictable upgrades—such as improved camera systems, potentially slimmer designs, and fresh color choices.
In contrast, Google has been aggressively embedding its AI platform directly into its mobile hardware.
Last year, the Pixel 9 lineup introduced a suite of AI capabilities, including Gemini Live (Gemini's voice interface), image generation utilities, call note-taking, searchable screenshots, and other tools. According to Google, conversations using Gemini Live have since proven to be five times longer than interactions using text-only input.

These include a Visual Overlays function for the camera, a proactive "Magic Cue" tool, Camera Coach, real-time Voice Translate for phone calls, an assistant-style "Take a Message" capability, Pixel Journal, and additional features.
Collectively, these updates enable Google to demonstrate the capabilities of its latest AI technology, which is accelerated by the Tensor G5 processor—an upgrade to the company’s custom chipset engineered for AI applications and the first to operate the newest Gemini Nano model.
Along with the product launch, Google revealed that Gemini Live will incorporate a new audio model capable of detecting the user’s emotional tone—such as excitement or concern—and adapting its responses appropriately.

For example, while traveling abroad, you could point your phone at street signs to instantly receive information about roadside parking regulations.

The concept of a more intuitive interaction between users and Google's technology has been a long-standing ambition for the company, dating back well before the current AI era. In the early 2010s, for instance, Google introduced a feature for Android called Google Now, which presented cards containing real-time information relevant to your daily schedule or time of day—such as nearby restaurants around lunch, upcoming appointments, or flight status details.
Now, Magic Cue represents the AI-powered revival of this concept, integrated directly into your daily apps and interactions.

Image Credits:Google During its demonstration, Google showed how Magic Cue could recommend a restaurant to visit with a friend, provide a quick way to call and reserve a table, suggest a reply to your friend with the booking information, or guide you to check your calendar for availability.
Magic Cue’s suggestions appear within the app you're actively using, highlighted with a rainbow-colored border for clarity, as well as in Daily Hub—a personalized daily summary in your Discover feed. You can tap on any suggestion to act on it immediately.

Image Credits:Google Like Google Now, Magic Cue can also surface reminders, but it takes this further by delivering notifications more intelligently. It might remind you about errands, such as returning an online purchase, suggest topics for further research, or recommend new music playlists to stream.
At launch, Magic Cue’s suggestions will focus on a limited set of activities, such as settling group payments, scheduling events, and displaying weather forecasts for upcoming travel. Over time, Google plans to expand its functionality and allow users to customize the data sources the feature can access.
It's worth noting that Apple is pursuing a similar vision by enabling users to interact with apps using Siri. However, its AI-enhanced version of Siri has been postponed until 2026.
Another notable addition to the Pixel 10 series is Camera Coach, an AI-based assistant designed to help users improve their photography skills.

Image Credits:Google This feature will debut in a preview mode on the new devices, using Gemini models to provide advice on framing and composition. An optional “get inspired” mode can even propose photo ideas and scenes you might not have thought of.

Image Credits:Google Additionally, the camera can now detect when you're taking a group photo. In these situations, the “Auto Best Take” function activates, analyzing as many as 150 images captured over several seconds to select the best shot—whether it's a single captured moment or an AI-generated composite from multiple frames.

Image Credits:Google Then, using the AI-powered “Ask Photos” tool, you can edit the selected image to adjust lighting, alter the framing, or remove unwanted objects—either by speaking to or texting the Photos AI assistant.
On Pro models, the Pro Res Zoom feature also employs AI, enabling users to digitally “zoom” in on architecture and landscapes at 30–60x magnification, or 30–60x for wildlife and animals.

ScreenshotImage Credits:Google In line with its expanded use of AI in imaging, Pixel 10 phones will also be the first to adopt the C2PA standard, which documents the origin and edit history of digital content, helping to identify when photos have been altered by artificial intelligence.
Voice Translate, another new AI function, uses on-device processing to translate phone conversations in real time, reportedly preserving the speaker’s natural vocal characteristics. This could transform communication for international business professionals and frequent travelers—if it performs as advertised. (Naturally, hands-on testing will be needed to confirm its effectiveness.)

Image Credits:Google Initially, the feature will support translation between English and Spanish, German, Japanese, French, Hindi, Italian, Portuguese, Swedish, Russian, and Indonesian.
Within the Pixel Phone app, a new “Take a Message” option provides real-time transcripts for missed or declined calls, then uses AI to determine the next steps based on the caller’s voicemail. (This enhancement will also extend to the Call Notes feature.)

Image Credits:Google Meanwhile, Pixel Journal is Google’s response to Apple’s Journal app, using AI to encourage users to record thoughts, monitor progress toward personal goals, and gain insights over time.

Image Credits:Google Other smaller AI improvements in the Pixel 10 family include writing aids built into the Gboard keyboard, updates to Pixel screenshots in Pixel Studio, and integrations between Notebook LM and the Recorder and screenshot functions.
