Google boosts AI search ads with Gemini chatbot integration
Google has started testing a new ad format in its next-generation "AI Mode" search, signaling the deep integration of Gemini’s capabilities into its core advertising ecosystem.
Following the launch of a new search bar for conversational queries, Google now uses the Gemini model to create "custom interpreters" for "sponsored products." These interpreters explain why users should buy specific items. For instance, a search for a "compact Italian coffee capsule machine" triggers a customized description of the Nespresso Vertuo Up, highlighting key features like "heating in 3 seconds" and "6 cup sizes."

To connect user searches with purchases, Google introduced an ad format with an integrated chatbot. Users can click "Ask" to chat with Gemini, which provides real-time answers using data from the advertiser’s website and may even prompt users to fill out forms for business inquiries.
The new ads also feature full-screen sponsored products, such as air fresheners, displayed below AI responses to life-related queries like home odor removal. Additionally, sponsored brands like Duolingo are highlighted at the bottom of recommendation lists for language learning services.
Vidya Srinivasan, Vice President of Google Ads and Commerce, noted that Google is redesigning ads for AI-powered search to make them a helpful part of conversations. This shift marks a move from simple information provision to deep commercial monetization, with future search ads becoming more interactive and contextually embedded.
