Google continues to integrate AI into your inbox. On Tuesday, the company expanded its “AI Inbox” feature for Gmail, introducing conversational AI capabilities. This allows you to ask Gmail about content in your inbox rather than typing search terms.
According to Google, the Gemini-powered feature known as Gmail Live helps users quickly locate information hidden in their inboxes.

For instance, you might need details about an upcoming flight, a dentist appointment time, an Airbnb door code, or information about a school event.
Previously, users had to type keywords, email addresses, or domain names into the search box to narrow results. This approach often fails to surface the right email, especially when the search term appears in multiple messages.
“Gmail Live can answer naturally worded questions, handle follow-ups, and adapt if you need to interrupt,” said Devanshi Bhandari, Gmail's product lead, during a briefing before Google I/O, where the feature debuted.
This is another example of Google demonstrating how its AI can deliver tangible improvements to widely used products, amid skepticism from those outside the tech industry about AI's value, especially as new data centers raise energy costs in local communities.
Making it easier to locate lost emails—a frustration almost everyone has faced—could serve as a practical, positive AI use case. At least, that's Google's hope.
Bhandari showed Gmail Live to journalists, posing questions about items in the inbox such as a child's show-and-tell project, a class trip, and hotel and flight details for a Detroit trip. Like using a standalone chatbot such as Gemini or ChatGPT, Gmail users can ask questions aloud in natural language, and the bot replies.
During the demo, Bhandari noted that Gmail Live grasped subtle differences between terms like “field trip” and “trip” and could switch topics seamlessly. The AI also extracts specific details from emails, such as a hotel room number, and deduces the people you're referring to even if not named.
Google also confirmed that similar voice capabilities will arrive on its to-do list app, Google Keep.
Notably, Gmail Live doesn't replace traditional Gmail search—it simply offers an alternative.
Google likely learned that not everyone wants a fully AI-driven experience after its AI-powered search overhaul in Google Photos sparked backlash. The company later made the AI feature optional following complaints.
Gmail is also adding other features such as ready-to-send drafts, instant file access, and the ability to mark individual tasks as completed.

In addition, the AI Inbox experience introduced earlier this year will extend beyond Google AI Ultra subscribers to include Google AI Pro and Plus subscribers. This feature provides a single-page overview of tasks and items needing attention that are buried in your inbox.
However, the voice-powered Gmail Live feature will launch later this summer and initially be available only to Google AI Ultra subscribers.
