General Motors (GM) is teaming up with Nvidia to weave AI into every corner of its business, from factories and robots to self-driving cars. This expanded partnership was announced by Nvidia's founder and CEO, Jensen Huang, during his keynote at the GTC conference in San Jose.
Huang declared that the era of autonomous vehicles is upon us, and he's excited about the collaboration. "We're looking forward to building with GM AI in all three areas," he said. "AI for manufacturing, so they can revolutionize the way they manufacture; AI for enterprise, so they can revolutionize the way they work to design cars and simulate cars, and then also AI for in the car."
Under the deal, Nvidia will supply GM with AI infrastructure, mainly GPUs, and assist the automaker in developing its own AI systems. Nvidia's long-standing ties with the automotive and autonomous vehicle sectors have seen it provide GPUs to companies like Tesla, Wayve, and Waymo for use in data centers or vehicles. Additionally, Nvidia has crafted an autonomous vehicle platform for automakers, featuring an operating system called DriveOS, which handles real-time AI processing and integrates advanced driving and cockpit features. Earlier this year, Toyota revealed plans to outfit its next-generation vehicles with automated driving capabilities powered by Nvidia's Drive AGX Orin supercomputer and the safety-focused DriveOS.
"We work with the car industry however the car industry would like us to work with them," Huang stated during the keynote. "We build all three computers: the training computer, the simulation computer, and the robotics computer (the self-driving car computer) — all the software stack that sits on top of it, the models and algorithms just as we do with all of the other industries that I've demonstrated."
GM aims to create custom AI systems using various Nvidia products, though the financial details of the deal remain under wraps. The automaker will leverage Nvidia Omniverse with Cosmos to train AI models for manufacturing, enabling the creation of next-generation factories and robotics. With Omniverse, GM can construct digital twins of its factories and assembly lines, allowing for virtual testing of new production processes without affecting current vehicle production. This initiative will also involve training robotics platforms GM currently uses for tasks like material handling, transport, and precision welding.
For in-vehicle technology, GM will employ Nvidia Drive AGX to enhance future advanced driver-assistance systems and in-cabin safety driving experiences. Recently, GM shifted its focus from its commercial robotaxi development to its hands-off advanced driver-assistance system, Super Cruise. The company is integrating its self-driving car subsidiary, Cruise, with its efforts to develop driver-assistance features, with the ultimate goal of creating fully autonomous personal vehicles.
GM's collaboration with Nvidia isn't new; the Detroit-based automaker has previously used Nvidia GPUs to train AI models for simulation and validation. The expanded partnership now includes using Nvidia AI products to enhance automotive plant design and operations.

GM's partnership with Nvidia sounds cool, but I'm not sure how it'll affect my daily life. The idea of AI in cars and factories is neat, but it feels a bit too futuristic. Hope they keep safety as a priority. It's exciting, but also a bit scary!

GM teaming up with Nvidia for AI in robotics and self-driving cars? Sounds like the future is here! I'm excited to see how this plays out, but I hope they don't forget about the human touch in manufacturing. Can't wait to see the first AI-driven GM car on the road!
