OpenAI recently published a fresh set of data on user demographics, global market dynamics, and core infrastructure, highlighting how generative AI has crossed a key milestone—evolving from a niche tool for enthusiasts into a widely adopted resource for everyday users.
According to OpenAI, ChatGPT’s user base has shifted dramatically. When it launched in late 2022, men made up about 80% of users. By fall 2025, active female users surpassed 50% for the first time. With monthly active users approaching one billion, roughly 500 million women now regularly engage with the tool worldwide. OpenAI sees this change as evidence that AI has moved beyond the tech-savvy minority and become a mainstream productivity tool.
On the much-discussed US–China AI rivalry, OpenAI’s intelligence team estimates that by 2025, China’s total AI investment will range from $97.2 billion to $125.3 billion. While the US still leads in overall capital expenditure (projected at $527 billion by 2026), China benefits from lower construction costs, giving it more purchasing power per dollar. Major contributors include Alibaba, ByteDance, Huawei, and Tencent.
Computing power remains central to the AI race. OpenAI’s compute capacity has jumped from 0.2 GW in 2023 to 1.9 GW in 2025. Although the company once floated long-term targets of 10 GW or more, its current approach is more grounded: it aims for 30 GW by 2030.
