The Cost Has Not Yet Been Justified
Frequent Releases Will Continue
Despite the economic challenges, Lee believes the AI industry remains highly competitive, with frequent releases of new large language models expected to continue. He identified companies like Elon Musk's xAI with its Grok models and DeepSeek AI as leaders in innovation, stating, "I think DeepSeek currently has the momentum."
He also mentioned that companies like OpenAI, Alibaba, Google, and Anthropic are making significant strides, but highlighted ByteDance as an underappreciated contender due to its vast customer base and multiple avenues for monetization. Additionally, Lee mentioned Baidu as a potential player, though he noted their current execution in developing new foundation-model technology is lagging.
One Winner and a Runner-up
Lee concluded by reflecting on the nature of technology markets, suggesting that in most cases, "you end up with only two [competitors], the winner, who makes money, and the runner-up, who breaks even, and everyone else, who dies."
