Introducing Continue: Revolutionizing AI Coding Assistance

Launched in June 2023 by CEO Ty Dunn and CTO Nate Sesti, Continue is a startup that's making waves in the world of AI coding assistants. As a Y Combinator alum, Continue has quickly built a robust community, amassing over 23,000 stars on GitHub and 11,000 members in its Discord community. Riding on this success, Continue is thrilled to announce the release of version 1.0 of its product, backed by a new $3 million seed funding round.

Surging Demand for AI Coding Assistants

The timing couldn't be better for Continue's launch, as the market for AI coding assistants is experiencing a boom. Established players like GitHub Copilot and Google's Gemini Code Assist are joined by newer entrants such as Codeium and Cursor, all of which have attracted significant investment. Amidst this competitive landscape, Continue positions itself as the "leading open-source AI code assistant," offering unique features that set it apart.

Continue's strength lies in its ability to connect with any model and allow teams to integrate their own context by pulling data from platforms like Jira or Confluence. This enables developers to create tailored autocomplete and chat experiences directly within their development environment. Whether it's getting in-line code suggestions as they type or asking specific questions about code through chat, Continue provides a seamless experience. Additionally, the edit function allows users to modify code simply by describing the desired changes.

With today's announcement, Continue introduces its first major release of open-source extensions for VS Code and JetBrains, signaling to enterprises that this is a reliable project they can invest in and build upon.

The Continue Hub: A New Ecosystem for Developers

Alongside the product release, Continue is launching the Continue Hub, a platform akin to Docker Hub, GitHub, or Hugging Face. This hub serves as a space where developers can create, share, and manage custom AI code assistants. At launch, the hub features pre-built assistants and "blocks" from verified partners like Mistral with its Codestral model, Claude 3.5 Sonnet from Anthropic, and DeepSeek-R1 from Ollama. Importantly, any developer or vendor can contribute to this growing ecosystem.

The concept of "blocks" is central to Continue Hub. These can include models, rules for customizing AI assistants, context providers like Jira or Confluence, prewritten prompts for complex instructions, documentation sites like Angular or React, data destinations for analytics, and MCP servers for building and sharing language model tools.

Fostering a Culture of Contribution

The vision for Continue Hub is to cater to the majority of users who might only need minor tweaks to existing assistants or blocks. But what drives developers to contribute and share their customizations? It's the same ethos that powers open-source communities everywhere. Many of Continue's launch partners, like Mistral and Anthropic, are keen to engage with developers directly through this hub.

Continue aims to counter the "black box" approach of proprietary AI assistants by promoting an open architecture where the community can collaborate to create essential building blocks. This "culture of contribution," as CEO Ty Dunn calls it, encourages developers to experiment and share, benefiting the entire ecosystem.

"With Continue 1.0, we are enabling this culture of contribution for developers to create and share custom AI code assistants," Dunn stated. "This registry will be a place of discovery within and across organizations, which will grow in lock-step with the evolution of blocks and open, AI-enhanced developer tools."

Control Over Data

Another key aspect of Continue's offering is the control it gives organizations over their data. Unlike generic platforms that might exploit user data to improve their services, Continue allows companies to decide how much data they want to share. This focus on data privacy addresses concerns raised by other platforms, like GitHub Copilot, which have faced criticism for using open-source contributions without clear consent.

"When you use Continue, you get to keep your data," Dunn emphasized. "As an organization, you can pool all of your data for all of your developers in one place. That is not possible in the one-size-fits-all, black box code assistant, where their SaaS offerings and strategy is to take your data and use it to improve it for everyone."

Business Model and Future Plans

Though still in its early stages, Continue has already collaborated with notable companies like Ionos, Siemens, and Morningstar during its development phase. The startup aims to serve developers across the spectrum, from freelancers and small teams to large enterprises.

Continue's new hub offers a free solo tier with three visibility levels: private, internal team sharing, and public. While this tier is sufficient for individual developers or small teams, larger organizations can opt for paid tiers that provide additional administration, governance, and security features. The teams tier introduces multi-player capabilities and admin controls, while the enterprise tier offers even more granular control over data, security, and governance.

Continue has raised a total of $5.1 million so far, with the latest $3 million SAFE round led by Heavybit, a developer-focused VC firm. The funds will primarily be used to expand the team, with plans to at least double the current headcount of five. Dunn highlighted that Continue's open-source approach allows them to keep costs low and focus on distribution.

"We're using open source as a distribution approach, and so as a result, we keep our costs very low — we don't need to capitalize nearly as much as other competitors," Dunn explained.
