A Familiar Streaming Alternative Emerges for Chromecast Fans
When Google phased out its compact Chromecast dongles in favor of the bulkier TV Streamer set-top box, many users lamented the loss of the minimalist streaming solution. Now, European consumers have discovered an intriguing alternative that channels the original Chromecast spirit - the Thomson Cast 150, though currently limited to continental markets.
At first glance, the Cast 150 appears to be a Chromecast reincarnation, sporting the same distinctive wide, flat white design with integrated HDMI connector. More importantly, it replicates the core functionality - running Google TV OS while maintaining full compatibility with Google's casting technology, ensuring a nearly identical user experience.
Where the Thomson device advances on its spiritual predecessor is in its technical specifications: 4K HDR10 video support paired with Dolby Atmos audio capabilities. The only potential limitation lies in its modest 8GB storage capacity, which may constrain app-heavy users. Preloaded apps include streaming giants Netflix and Disney+, while the remote features Google's newly required "Live TV" shortcut button.

While we praised Google's TV Streamer as a comprehensive upgrade, its transition to set-top box form factor and near-doubled price point left some users wanting. The Cast 150 hits the sweet spot at €69 (approximately $78) - matching the former 4K Chromecast's pricing while maintaining the original's unobtrusive design ethos.
European availability begins May 28th, with UK distribution to follow at an unspecified later date. Regrettably for North American consumers, Thomson has confirmed no plans for U.S. market release at this time.
