Caterpillar Partners with Nvidia to Integrate AI into Construction Machinery

Caterpillar is advancing its integration of AI and automation into construction equipment through a new collaboration with semiconductor leader Nvidia.
The heavy machinery manufacturer is testing an AI assistive system in its mid-sized Cat 306 CR Mini Excavator. Developed using Nvidia's Jetson Thor physical AI platform, the "Cat AI" system is being showcased at CES this Wednesday.
Brandon Hootman, Caterpillar's Vice President of Data and AI, explained to TechCrunch that Cat AI utilizes a network of AI agents to assist equipment operators by answering queries, providing resources, offering safety guidance, and scheduling maintenance services.
A key advantage of implementing this technology is the valuable operational data these systems gather and transmit.
"Our customers work in the field, not behind computer screens," Hootman noted. "Having access to real-time insights and being able to take action while operating their equipment is crucial for their operations."
Caterpillar is also experimenting with digital replicas of construction sites using Nvidia's Omniverse simulation platform to optimize project scheduling and accurately estimate material requirements. Hootman revealed that Caterpillar's equipment transmits approximately 2,000 data points per second, which will enhance these simulation models.
While the company already operates fully autonomous vehicles in mining, Hootman sees these pilot programs as a strategic move toward expanding automation across their product lineup.

Nvidia's Chief Scientist Bill Dally told TechCrunch in 2025 that the company views physical AI as the next evolutionary stage for its advanced GPU technology.
During its Monday CES keynote, Nvidia detailed its comprehensive physical AI ecosystem, featuring open AI models including the Cosmos model series, simulation tools, and development kits.
While physical AI might seem exclusive to robotics companies, Nvidia's VP of Robotics and Edge AI Deepu Talla clarified that the company adopts a broader perspective, noting that robotics development is now widespread across industries.
"Physical AI represents the next major wave of artificial intelligence," Talla emphasized. "Nvidia is leading this transformation with computing systems that train models, run simulations, and deploy AI across various platforms - from autonomous vehicles to Caterpillar machinery."
