Google Gemini Upgrades Floating Bubbles to Promote Lightweight AI Assistants
Starting September 6, Google initiated a phased rollout of the updated "minimized" quick action button featuring the Gemini interface for Android users. This update enables users to collapse the expansive Gemini overlay into a compact floating bubble, marked by the Spark logo, which occupies minimal screen space.

This enhancement overcomes the limitations of traditional full-screen, intrusive mobile AI interactions. Users can now seamlessly switch between email, social media, or web browsers while Gemini processes complex queries in the background, significantly boosting multitasking efficiency within the Android ecosystem.
Regarding interaction design, the new minimized button appears above or adjacent to the reply box. The collapsed floating shortcut can be anchored to one of six preset positions along the screen edge, with support for drag-and-drop repositioning and swipe-to-dismiss gestures. Android 17 devices offer additional flexibility, allowing users to click outside the bubble, use system back gestures, or access system-level bubble settings for an enhanced multi-window experience. To address minor issues like position resets during early testing, Google is refining the functionality through progressive updates.
As mobile AI evolves from simple Q&A to complex workflows, non-intrusive interaction and background persistence are becoming critical for generative AI adoption. By transforming Gemini from a static pop-up into a dynamic background tool, Google enhances mobile multitasking capabilities and sets a benchmark for lightweight, seamless generative AI interfaces across the industry.
