Apple Store App Unveils AI Virtual Shopping Assistant to Support Product Q&A and Decision-Making

MacRumors reports that Apple Inc. has recently revised the privacy policy for its Apple Store app, signaling the imminent arrival of a "virtual shopping assistant." Designed to answer product inquiries and guide purchasing decisions via a generative AI chat interface, this feature builds on Apple's earlier introduction of a similar assistant in the Apple Support app. By extending AI-driven interactions to retail channels, Apple is making a strategic push to modernize its e-commerce customer experience.
To deliver tailored recommendations, the assistant will process account details, device identifiers, carrier data, chat logs, and location information. Regarding privacy and compliance, Apple emphasizes that all chat data shared with third-party partners will be thoroughly anonymized to strip personal identifiers. These partners are restricted to using the data solely for generating conversational responses. Furthermore, with user consent, chat records will be retained to allow users to review past interactions and enable Apple to conduct business analysis and optimize the user experience.
Although the virtual shopping assistant has not yet officially launched, it is believed to be undergoing internal or limited testing. As hardware and large language models become increasingly integrated, Apple is embedding AI chat capabilities directly into e-commerce workflows. This integration aims to boost conversion rates and enhance user satisfaction, while accelerating the broader adoption of generative AI within the consumer retail sector.
