Apple agrees to $250M settlement over delayed Siri AI rollout

Apple has agreed to pay $250 million to resolve a class-action lawsuit regarding its marketing of AI features prior to the iPhone 16 launch, as first reported by the Financial Times.
The lawsuit claimed Apple overstated the capabilities of Apple Intelligence, including a major Siri upgrade. Plaintiffs argued the company misled consumers by suggesting advanced AI tools would be available sooner than they actually were, particularly regarding Siri’s promised improvements, which have not yet fully materialized.
According to the complaint, iPhone 15 and 16 buyers believed they were purchasing cutting-edge AI tools that were unavailable at the time of purchase. The lawsuit characterizes this as false advertising, asserting that Apple’s marketing influenced purchasing decisions based on incomplete or delayed features.
While Apple did not admit to wrongdoing, it chose to settle rather than continue litigation. Under the proposed agreement, eligible U.S. customers who purchased the iPhone 15 or 16 between June 10, 2024, and March 29, 2025, may receive up to $95 per device.
Apple has promoted an advanced Siri since unveiling Apple Intelligence at WWDC 2024. These updates aim to make Siri function more like modern AI chatbots such as ChatGPT or Claude. While earlier reports suggested Google Gemini would power the upgrade, recent information indicates the next iPhone operating system may allow users to select from various third-party large language models.
This settlement precedes Apple’s annual developer conference on June 8, where the company is expected to preview an AI-enhanced version of Siri.
