Apple Exec John Ternus Calls iPhone Best AI Device

Apple’s incoming CEO John Ternus clarified the company’s AI strategy during Wednesday’s Surprise and Shine event, asserting that the iPhone is already the premier AI device and prioritizing user data privacy over competitors.
As Ternus succeeds Tim Cook, who transitions to executive chairman, these remarks outline Apple’s competitive approach in the AI era. Rather than developing specialized hardware, Apple intends to position the iPhone as the primary interface for consumer interaction with emerging AI technologies.
Describing the ideal “intelligent personal hub” during his keynote, Ternus explained that such a device requires deep contextual awareness of the user, constant accessibility, robust on-device processing power for local AI models, and cloud connectivity for broader capabilities.
He further noted that this device must feature a large screen, advanced cameras and microphones for environmental perception, and extended battery life.
“It should also be incredibly intuitive, requiring minimal learning time,” Ternus stated. “Crucially, it must integrate seamlessly with your existing devices, apps, and services to create a unified experience.”
“The result is something remarkably familiar,” Ternus concluded. “No other product on the market is better engineered to serve as your intelligent personal hub than the iPhone.”
Ternus also highlighted Apple’s distinct approach to data privacy, contrasting it with competitors who view user data as an asset to collect and store. This marked one of Apple’s most direct statements regarding its differentiation strategy in the AI landscape.
“Trust has limits when you lose control over your data,” Ternus explained. “That is why Apple Intelligence executes on-device whenever possible.”
