Anthropic Engineers Reveal Claude Was Trained to Write for AI, Not Humans

Large AI models frequently exhibit unexpected side effects as they evolve. Following recent user reports of a decline in Claude's writing quality since the Opus 4.6 release, alongside concerns about a distinct "Claude accent," Anthropic engineer Jackson Kernion recently addressed the issue, shedding light on the technical roots of this phenomenon.
Claude's optimization strategy has increasingly prioritized mathematical reasoning and coding proficiency. To enhance performance in complex engineering tasks, developers incorporated training data originally intended for other AI models, including technical documentation and code comments. This approach inadvertently taught the model to "write for AI rather than humans," producing dense, highly coherent text that facilitates machine-to-machine communication but hinders human readability.
This issue stems from reinforcement learning biases within the reward function. As optimization targets shift toward improving AI comprehension, the model tends to sacrifice the narrative flow and readability preferred by humans. While the latest Opus 5.5 version has achieved a more balanced writing style—rated as the most satisfactory since Opus 4.6—the team continues working to fully surpass the quality of earlier iterations.
