Anthropic outlines ambitious plan for $50 billion data center expansion

On Wednesday, Anthropic announced a major new data center alliance with UK-based neocloud provider Fluidstack, pledging a $50 billion investment to construct facilities across the United States to address its escalating computational demands.
The new data centers, slated for Texas and New York, are scheduled to become operational throughout 2026. The company stated these sites are "purpose-built for Anthropic, designed to maximize efficiency for our specific workloads."
"We are approaching an era of AI capable of accelerating scientific breakthroughs and tackling complex challenges in unprecedented ways," said Anthropic CEO and co-founder Dario Amodei (shown above) in an official statement. "Achieving this potential necessitates an infrastructure foundation that can sustain continued frontier development."
Given the substantial compute requirements of Anthropic's Claude model family, the company already maintains significant cloud partnerships with Google and Amazon (which is also an investor). However, this initiative represents its first major foray into developing custom infrastructure. The $50 billion commitment, while significant, aligns with the company's internal revenue forecasts, which reportedly project Anthropic reaching $70 billion in revenue and $17 billion in positive cash flow by 2028.
Although $50 billion constitutes a massive commitment of capital and computing power, it is still overshadowed by comparable projects from Anthropic's rivals. Meta has committed to constructing $600 billion worth of data centers over the next three years, while the Stargate partnership involving SoftBank, OpenAI, and Oracle has already budgeted $500 billion for infrastructure. This surge in spending has raised concerns about a potential AI bubble, driven by worries over softening demand or capital misallocation.
The deal represents a significant victory for Fluidstack, a relatively new neocloud firm that has emerged as a preferred vendor during the AI infrastructure boom. Founded in 2017, the company was appointed in February as the lead partner for a 1-gigawatt AI project supported by the French government, involving over $11 billion in expenditure. According to Forbes, Fluidstack already has established partnerships with Meta, Black Forest Labs, and France's Mistral.
Fluidstack was also among the first third-party vendors to receive Google's custom-designed TPUs, a strong endorsement of the company's capabilities.
