Amazon has officially announced its acquisition of Fauna Robotics, a two-year-old startup launched by former engineers from Meta and Google. The company specializes in developing humanoid robots scaled for children.
Bloomberg first broke the news of the acquisition. Financial details of the transaction have not been made public. However, it is confirmed that Fauna's team, including its two co-founders, will be joining Amazon in New York City.
“We are inspired by Fauna's goal to create capable, safe, and entertaining robots for a wide audience,” an Amazon spokesperson said in a statement. “By combining this vision with Amazon's deep robotics knowledge and our longstanding history of building trust with customers through retail and smart devices, we are eager to explore new innovations that simplify and enhance daily life.”
Fauna started distributing its first product earlier this year: a 59-pound bipedal robot named Sprout, which was sent to a curated group of research and development partners.
This marks Amazon's second known robotics acquisition this month. Amazon confirmed to TechCrunch earlier in March that it also purchased Rivr, a Zurich-based startup known for an autonomous delivery robot capable of climbing stairs. The terms of that deal were also not disclosed.
