Alipay secretly tests AI version codenamed Ba Project, unveils first AI assistant Abao
Ant Group is reportedly testing an "AI-powered Alipay" in stealth mode, a strategic overhaul as the national-level app pivots toward the era of AI agents. Insiders say the initiative, internally called "Project Bao," introduces a fundamental shift from traditional payment tools to an AI-centric native interface, completely reimagining user interaction.

Highlights of the update include:
Introduction of the AI assistant "Abao": The new version adopts a "conversation-first" approach, allowing users to bypass complex menus and simply text or speak commands to "Abao" for actions like ordering food or booking a ride. Redesign of the bottom interface: The bottom navigation now features two core modules: "Assets" and "Abao." While high-frequency actions like scanning and payments remain, the Assets section has been transformed into a card-style display that shows liquid assets, investments, and credit status at a glance. Two versions with optional switching: To ease the transition, the original interface will remain the default after launch, with users able to opt into the AI version as their homepage. The current version is in an extremely limited gray-scale test. Activation requires a specific internal invitation code, with successful users receiving three additional codes. Some users have noted that searching "AI version of Alipay" in the Alipay search bar may also grant access.
As super apps like WeChat and Douyin rapidly advance their AI agent capabilities, this restructuring is designed to preserve Alipay's position as a key gateway for financial accounts and daily life services.
