YouTube announced on Tuesday that its synthetic-media detection technology is now available to eligible creators within the YouTube Partner Program, concluding its initial testing phase. This tool enables creators to request the removal of AI-generated content that simulates their appearance or voice.
A YouTube spokesperson confirmed to TechCrunch that this marks the first phase of the broader launch, noting that qualifying creators were notified via email this morning.
YouTube's detection system is designed to identify and handle AI-generated content that features a creator's likeness, including their visual image and vocal characteristics.
The technology aims to protect individuals from having their likeness misappropriated, whether for unauthorized product endorsements or the spread of false information. Incidents of such misuse have become increasingly common, such as when the company Elecrow used an AI-generated clone of YouTuber Jeff Geerling's voice to market its products.

To start, creators must navigate to the "Likeness" tab, agree to data processing terms, and use a smartphone to scan an on-screen QR code. This redirects them to a webpage for identity verification, which requires submitting a photo ID and a short selfie video.
Once access to the tool is granted, creators can review all detected videos and submit a takedown request based on YouTube's privacy guidelines or file a copyright claim. An option to archive the video is also available.
