Yann LeCun's AI Startup Secures $1.03 Billion in Funding

Yann LeCun, Turing Award laureate and former Chief AI Scientist at Meta, announced on Tuesday that his new venture, Advanced Machine Intelligence (AMI), has secured $1.03 billion in funding at a pre-money valuation of $3.5 billion.
AMI is dedicated to commercializing AI systems centered on "reasoning, planning, and world models." Following his departure from Meta, LeCun is pursuing a new technological direction to challenge the prevailing generative AI paradigm.
LeCun emphasized that large language models (LLMs), which operate on "next-word prediction," are fundamentally limited in their ability to create genuine general-purpose agents. AMI's mission is to develop systems capable of logical reasoning and behavioral planning within complex, real-world environments. The company's immediate focus is on sectors with demanding requirements for advanced intelligence, such as aerospace, automotive manufacturing, biomedicine, pharmaceuticals, and major industrial manufacturers, positioning itself as a core supplier of intelligent systems for these industries.
LeCun disclosed that this technology is poised to enable home robots with a "common-sense" understanding of the physical world. Furthermore, he is in discussions with Meta regarding the potential integration of this technology into the Ray-Ban smart glasses lineup. This latest funding round was led by Cathay Innovation, Greycroft, Hiro Capital, HV Capital, and Bezos Expeditions.
