Volcano Engine's Seedance AI shifts focus from copyright protection to IP commercialization

Yule Capital reports that ByteDance’s Huoshan Engine has invited several copyright holders to beta test its new “AI Copyright Management Platform.” This tool enables brand owners and short-form drama producers to commercially leverage legally licensed IP using models like Seedance and Seedream, while copyright holders manage, review, and execute real-time transactions via a dedicated backend. The platform is scheduled for a public launch in the second half of this year.
According to reports, the platform has already secured partnerships with dozens of top-tier IPs. These include classic films from Bigger Group—Stephen Chow’s company—such as “The King of Comedy,” “Big Hero,” and “Yangtze River 7,” alongside partnerships with several major entertainment agencies.
The platform operates on two licensing models: “template creation” for consumer-grade entertainment derivatives and “free creation” for B-side brand customization. Reports indicate that certain B-side project fees have reached the millions.
This launch signals a strategic shift for Seedance, moving from early-stage restrictions to “protected development.” By implementing granular permission levels and revenue-sharing structures, the platform aims to resolve the inefficiencies of traditional authorization processes, enabling copyright holders to capture new revenue streams in the AI era.
Previously, the Motion Picture Association in the United States reached an agreement with ByteDance regarding IP protection, praising its technological innovations in safeguarding copyright.
