The U.S. Department of Defense has issued a firm response to the lawsuit filed by AI startup Anthropic over its "supply chain risk" designation. A senior official explicitly stated that there is little chance of restarting negotiations on the military's use of AI tools and that the litigation will not change the Pentagon's ultimate decision.
In an interview, Emil Michael, Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering, publicly characterized Anthropic's lawsuit as "an expected reaction," but expressed doubt that the dispute can be settled through the courts.
The conflict stems from the Pentagon's earlier move to place Anthropic on its "supply chain risk" list—a designation that can significantly hinder a company's ability to secure government contracts and implies potential risks to national security.
In its filing, Anthropic asks the court to revoke this designation, contending that the military's actions violate constitutionally guaranteed rights to due process and free speech.
At the heart of the dispute is a fundamental "red line" in AI technology. Anthropic maintains strict limits on using its models for lethal weapons or mass surveillance, while the military pushes for more stringent and authoritative guidelines governing AI deployment.
