On March 3, 2026, Alibaba's DAMO Academy announced a series of collaborations with the government of Pakistan and multiple institutions, formalizing the introduction of its multi-cancer screening AI technology into the country through signed memoranda of understanding. Under the agreements, Capital Hospital and Khawaja Safdar Medical College will integrate this AI system into their imaging departments. The technology will assist in identifying various common cancers, including pancreatic, gastric, colorectal, and esophageal cancer, as well as chronic conditions like fatty liver. Pakistan's largest cloud provider, Sky47, will provide the underlying infrastructure and deployment support necessary for the technology's large-scale application.
This partnership signifies the deepening reach of China's medical AI technology in Belt and Road Initiative countries. The DAMO Academy-developed system utilizes computer vision and deep learning algorithms to help doctors identify subtle lesions that are difficult for the human eye to detect, aiming to improve early detection rates and the timeliness of treatment. Currently, this multi-cancer screening AI service is operational in medical institutions across 10 countries and regions globally, serving over 20 million people.
From an industry perspective, medical AI is evolving from single-disease screening toward comprehensive multi-disease joint diagnosis.
