Apple CEO Tim Cook emphasized AI's transformative potential during a rare company-wide meeting covered by Bloomberg, addressing Apple's cautious approach to AI deployment amidst recent setbacks. Speaking at Apple's Cupertino headquarters on Friday, Cook told employees the AI revolution rivals or surpasses pivotal technological shifts like the internet, mobile computing, and cloud services in significance. "This is our moment to lead," Cook asserted, according to attendees. "We're fully committed to making the necessary investments."
Cook referenced Apple's historical pattern of entering markets later but delivering definitive products, citing innovations like the iPhone and iPad. "We didn't invent these categories, but we perfected them," he noted, drawing parallels to Apple's current AI strategy.
Apple's software engineering leader Craig Federighi addressed the postponed Siri overhaul, explaining how initial plans for dual-system architecture proved inadequate. The original design separated conventional Siri functions from new LLM-powered capabilities, but "we recognized this wouldn't meet Apple's quality standards," Federighi admitted. Development has since shifted to building a unified, next-generation platform.
The internal meeting followed Cook's comments during Apple's recent earnings call about potential strategic acquisitions to accelerate AI development. The company faces intensified competition for top AI talent, including recent departures to Meta's aggressive AI recruitment initiative.
