Spotify unveils AI audiobook creation tool powered by ElevenLabs

As part of its latest announcements, Spotify introduced a new AI tool powered by ElevenLabs that lets authors self-publish audiobooks directly through the Spotify for Authors platform. During its Investor Day event, the company confirmed the feature will enter beta in June, available by invitation only and initially supporting just English.
Authors using this AI-powered audiobook creation tool won't be locked into an exclusive agreement, so they can distribute their generated audiobooks across any platform.
This announcement builds on Spotify's existing collaboration with ElevenLabs, which already allowed authors to upload audiobooks produced on the voice AI startup's platform to Spotify.
Spotify already had a partnership with Google Play Books for digitally narrated content. However, the company likely wanted to give authors access to more expressive, human-like voice models, such as those from ElevenLabs. Interestingly, ElevenLabs launched its own self-publishing platform for authors in 2025.
Additionally, Spotify is expanding "Spotify for Authors" to support ten more languages: French, Canadian French, German, Dutch, Latin American Spanish, Swedish, Finnish, Icelandic, Danish, and Norwegian.
This year, Spotify will also expand its Audiobook+ plans, offering higher listening limits and eventually introducing new options for students and families. However, the company did not specify any pricing or usage details for these plans in its announcement.
So far, Spotify has reached over one million Audiobook+ subscriptions and is on track to generate $100 million in annualized recurring revenue.
During the event, Spotify introduced a natural language question feature to help users discover audiobooks. The company also announced that this summer, it will extend its prompt-based playlist creation tool—currently available for podcasts and music—to include audiobooks.
Spotify has significantly ramped up its audiobook efforts over the past few years, building a catalog of 700,000 titles. The company expanded internationally, invested in non-English content, introduced in-app purchases, and launched audiobook charts. This year, it also started a program allowing authors to sell physical books in the U.S. and U.K.
According to Spotify, these efforts have driven a 60% year-over-year increase in listening hours. The company also noted that more than half of its audiobook listeners began using the feature within the past year.
