Spotify Touts AI as Key to Empowering Its Leading Developers

Has AI-driven development reached a critical milestone? Spotify certainly suggests so. During its Q4 earnings call this week, the company revealed that its top engineers "haven’t written a single line of code since December." That remark came from Spotify co-CEO Gustav Söderström, who also highlighted how the company is leveraging AI to speed up product development.
Notably, Spotify launched more than 50 new features and updates to its streaming app throughout 2025. More recently, it introduced AI-driven innovations like Prompted Playlists, Page Match for audiobooks, and About This Song—all released in the past few weeks.
Spotify told analysts that engineers are using an internal platform called “Honk” to accelerate coding and feature delivery. This system enables remote, real-time code deployment through generative AI, specifically Claude Code.
“To give a concrete example, an engineer on their morning commute can use Slack on their phone to ask Claude to fix a bug or add a feature to the iOS app,” explained Söderström. “Once Claude completes the task, the engineer receives a new app version directly in Slack, ready to merge into production—all before arriving at the office.”
According to Spotify, this system has dramatically boosted coding and deployment efficiency.
“We see this as just the beginning of AI’s role in development, not the end,” Söderström added.
He also emphasized that Spotify is building a unique dataset that other large language models can't easily replicate, unlike more generic sources such as Wikipedia. That’s because music-related queries often lack a single factual answer, he noted.

“We're building a proprietary dataset that no one else is compiling at this scale. It’s growing and improving each time we retrain our models,” Söderström stated.
Analysts also inquired about Spotify’s stance on AI-generated music. The company clarified that it lets artists and labels specify in track metadata how a song was created, while continuing to monitor the platform for spam content.
