Sony Unveils PS5 Pro Enhanced with Advanced Liquid Metal Cooling
Sony has released a detailed teardown of the PlayStation 5 Pro, showcasing refinements made to the console's cooling system. These updates involve adjustments to the liquid metal cooling design, intended to deliver more consistent thermal performance.
This redesign follows earlier—though unverified—reports suggesting the liquid metal in the original PS5 could potentially leak and cause damage. Some outlets even advised against positioning the console upright after a repair technician and YouTuber was partially misrepresented by the jailbreak site Wololo.net. Wololo later clarified that its initial coverage contained a "critical misunderstanding," and the issue never appears to have been widespread.
Nevertheless, Sony confirms it modified the design for the PS5 Pro. Shinya Tsuchida, PS5 Pro Mechanical Design Lead, explains:
During the development of the original PS5, we dedicated significant effort to insulation research. While the fundamental structure remains consistent in the PS5 Pro, we enhanced stability by adding fine grooves in the liquid metal application area. From our early research, we anticipated semiconductor components would become denser, making liquid metal cooling increasingly essential. That foresight proved correct, and the technology was vital in designing the PS5 Pro.

The post also clarifies why the motherboard's circuitry is difficult to see: additional electrical layers are embedded beneath the surface to accelerate memory access.
