It seems that using AI as a cover story for layoffs is quickly losing its appeal.
Unlike many tech leaders who have laid off thousands this year, citing AI-driven restructuring, Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev notably avoided any mention of AI in his memo announcing the company would cut 10% of its full-time workforce—roughly 290 people.
The company's regulatory filing also omitted any reference to AI, instead describing the layoffs as a restructuring effort.
Still, Tenev mentioned that the company would leverage "frontier technologies to push our execution even further," a phrase that seems deliberately crafted to avoid explicitly naming AI. This isn't surprising: public sentiment toward AI and related infrastructure projects has been declining, even as a small cohort of tech executives amass enormous wealth.
But Tenev also reinforced the prevailing narrative that companies must now operate with smaller teams and "flatter organizational structures," writing: "We cannot default to operating as a heavily-layered organization. We must be a lean, hyper-focused team where every single individual is empowered to make a massive impact."
Similar language has appeared in layoff announcements from a range of companies—including Amazon, Block, Coinbase, GitLab, and Intuit—suggesting that large teams, bureaucracy, and siloed departments are now viewed as undesirable overhead, especially as AI tools promise to significantly boost productivity.
Some observers interpret this as a tacit acknowledgment that tech companies over-hired after the pandemic and are now scaling back as costs mount—particularly those tied to heavy AI usage.
Regardless, these companies are performing well. Tech stocks have broadly surged, fueled by record revenues, expanding profit margins (GitLab reported an 88% gross margin last month), soaring demand for cloud services, and the conviction that the billions invested in data center projects will yield returns many times over.
Robinhood itself reported a 15% revenue increase in the first quarter of April, and the company noted that its second quarter is shaping up even better, driven by higher prediction market fees, subscription revenue, and robust equity and options trading volumes as markets stabilize.
On Tuesday, the company also announced it would close "a small number" of open positions and incur approximately $28 million in costs related to the layoffs.
