ChatGPT Officially Surpasses Google Search for Me - Here's Why

It's worth noting that websites that block OpenAI's web crawler won't show up in search results, which means you might miss out on content from some of your favorite sites. However, OpenAI has established partnerships with reputable news sources like the Associated Press, Condé Nast, Dotdash Meredith, Financial Times, Hearst, Reuters, The Atlantic, Time, and Vox Media. Additionally, many other websites have opted to be included in the ChatGPT source.
ChatGPT Search vs. Google
I conducted a side-by-side comparison of three search queries using both Google and ChatGPT. The first query was simple: "When is Daylight Saving Time?" Both platforms provided nearly identical results, displaying the dates and a brief description.
While there's no clear winner in this case, it showcases how well ChatGPT can keep up with Google, which has dominated the search engine market for over a decade.
For the second query, I asked, "My friend was talking about a brunette singer-actress on Disney Channel who made a movie called Monte Carlo. Who was she talking about?" I kept the query as conversational as possible.
In this instance, ChatGPT outperformed Google by immediately identifying Selena Gomez. It even rephrased my question in its response and provided additional context. Google, on the other hand, simply displayed an excerpt from Selena Gomez's Wikipedia page, which didn't even mention her first name directly.
Lastly, I challenged both search engines with a more complex query: "Plan a seven-day vacation to Ireland, where I stay mostly in the countryside." Google's response was a list of links, leaving me to sift through them. ChatGPT, however, generated a detailed, day-by-day itinerary with specific locations and activities.
After tweaking the prompt to include "with links" at the end, ChatGPT provided an itinerary complete with links to more information and booking options. This clearly demonstrated ChatGPT's edge in providing a more user-friendly and comprehensive response.
These examples highlight ChatGPT's strengths over Google, especially for everyday searches. However, Google still holds advantages in areas like shopping and maps, which ChatGPT isn't equipped to handle yet. For general queries, though, ChatGPT offers a quick and easy way to find the information you need.
ChatGPT Search Availability
The search feature is accessible on the ChatGPT website, desktops, and mobile apps for ChatGPT Plus, Team, and SearchGPT waitlist users. A ChatGPT Plus subscription costs $20 per month and includes additional benefits like Voice Mode, Canvas, and unlimited image generation. Enterprise and Edu users will gain access in the coming weeks, while free users can expect access in the coming months.
