OpenAI Marketing Chief Takes Leave for Breast Cancer Treatment
Kate Rouch, OpenAI’s marketing leader, is taking a three-month leave to focus on treatment for invasive breast cancer.
In a LinkedIn post, Rouch announced that Gary Briggs, former Meta CMO, will act as interim marketing head during her absence.
“Just weeks into my dream role this year, I was diagnosed with invasive breast cancer,” Rouch shared. “For the past five months, I’ve balanced chemotherapy at UCSF with leading our marketing team. It’s been the toughest chapter for me, my husband, and our two young children.”
Rouch remains optimistic, noting her prognosis is “excellent” with expectations of a full recovery.
“One in eight women in the U.S. will face invasive breast cancer,” she wrote. “Annually, 42,000 lose their lives. Rates are climbing among younger women. By sharing my experience, I hope to urge others to prioritize health over work and family demands. A routine checkup saved my life—it might save yours too.”
Rouch, who previously collaborated with Briggs at Meta, joined OpenAI in December. She formerly served as Coinbase’s CMO and led brand and product marketing for Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and Facebook.
