OpenAI Taps Math Experts as External Advisors to Bolster AI Evaluation
On Monday, OpenAI announced the formation of a "Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence Advisory Group," backed by the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton. This initiative aims to integrate insights from the mathematics community to evaluate and advise on the company's mathematical research. The inaugural group comprises nine mathematicians who will act as a liaison between the mathematical community and the public, assessing the academic merit of OpenAI's recent breakthroughs and coordinating related publications.

This development follows OpenAI's recent announcement of a solution to the Navier-Stokes equations, a Millennium Prize problem. The company also revealed that its internal model has resolved over 100 previously unsolved problems across various mathematical fields, raising concerns among some mathematicians about AI's accelerating role in cutting-edge research. Earlier this month, 25 Fields Medalists signed an open letter expressing worries about the potential impact of AI labs competing to solve famous mathematical problems on academic integrity.
