OpenAI Explores 'Sign in with ChatGPT' for Third-Party Apps

OpenAI is investigating options for users to access third-party applications using their ChatGPT credentials, according to a webpage released on Tuesday. The company is actively seeking feedback from developers interested in incorporating this feature into their platforms.
With approximately 600 million monthly active users, ChatGPT ranks among the world’s leading consumer applications. OpenAI aims to leverage this widespread adoption to expand into areas like e-commerce, social platforms, and personal devices. A potential “Sign in with ChatGPT” option could position OpenAI as a competitor to tech giants like Apple, Google, and Microsoft, which offer seamless sign-in solutions for various online services.
Earlier this month, OpenAI introduced a preview of the “Sign in with ChatGPT” feature for developers using Codex CLI, its open-source AI coding tool for terminals. This allowed developers to link their ChatGPT Free, Plus, or Pro accounts to their API accounts, with Plus users receiving $5 in API credits and Pro users $50.

OpenAI is keen to integrate this sign-in feature across a diverse range of companies. Its developer interest form inquires about the size of an app’s user base, from small startups with under 1,000 weekly users to major platforms with over 100 million. It also asks how developers currently monetize AI features and whether they use the OpenAI API.
In 2023, CEO Sam Altman hinted at exploring a “sign in with OpenAI” feature for 2024. Now, in 2025, OpenAI appears to be actively developing this capability. The timeline for its public rollout to ChatGPT users and the number of participating companies remain undisclosed.
OpenAI has not yet responded to TechCrunch’s request for further details.

This 'Sign in with ChatGPT' idea sounds slick! 😎 But I'm wondering how secure it'd be to use one login across apps. OpenAI better nail the privacy part, or it’s a hard pass for me.
