OpenAI Plans to Sue Apple Over ChatGPT's iOS Marginalization
OpenAI is reportedly considering legal action against Apple, including a formal breach notice, due to dissatisfaction with how ChatGPT is integrated into iOS and Apple Intelligence. According to Android Authority , OpenAI executives believe Apple has not made "sincere efforts" in promoting the product, resulting in actual subscription conversion rates falling far below the expectations set when the agreement was signed in 2024.

At the heart of the dispute is the level of functional integration and user reach. Internal OpenAI research indicates that although ChatGPT is integrated with Siri and system writing tools, Apple's interaction barriers remain high—users must navigate complex secondary commands to activate features. The system-integrated version's interaction quality significantly trails that of the standalone app. OpenAI views this "marginalization" of the integration strategy as a violation of the original cooperation intent, making it difficult to reach Apple's vast user base.
Meanwhile, Apple is actively bringing in multiple partners to hedge technical risks. Apple has confirmed it is working with Google to introduce Gemini into Siri and is exploring a collaboration with Anthropic. While non-exclusive agreements legally permit such competition, from OpenAI's perspective, Apple's diversification further erodes the market premium it held as the "first partner."
Apple previously paid $250 million in compensation for falsely advertising certain AI features. This shift in partners once again highlights the ecological challenges Apple faces in its local AI implementation. The dispute not only signals that the distribution of benefits between large model providers and channel distributors is entering a period of reshaping, but may also force Apple to readjust the interaction logic of third-party AI in upcoming system updates.
