OpenAI launched a new initiative Monday to bolster open source cybersecurity and mitigate vulnerabilities.
“Patch the Planet,” a nod to the 1995 film Hackers, partners OpenAI with security firm Trail of Bits to help maintainers secure their projects.
Trail of Bits security experts will collaborate directly with maintainers to review code, while OpenAI’s tools, such as Codex Security, support the process.
“Many maintainers face increasing reports with limited time and resources,” OpenAI stated. “Patch the Planet reduces this burden: engineers review findings before they reach maintainers, develop patches and tests, and create reusable workflows for ongoing security improvements.”
Trail of Bits engineers act like code EMTs, helping maintainers identify and triage issues with OpenAI’s software. The project’s long-term scalability remains unclear.
Open source forms the digital foundation of commercial software, yet its decentralized nature often leaves it insecure. Bugs in these projects can severely impact commercial codebases, as seen with the log4j vulnerability.
Concerns about AI tools like Mythos arise from their ability to automatically find bugs and create exploits. While automating cybercrime is not new, these tools make it significantly easier for malicious actors.
OpenAI reverses this trend by using AI to help the open source community defend itself. This move appears to be a competitive response to Anthropic, while addressing a critical need within the open source ecosystem.
