OpenAI Files for IPO, Targets 2027 Listing
OpenAI’s Chief Financial Officer, Sara Ferial, announced during a Wednesday all-hands meeting that the company targets a 2027 public listing, with the possibility of an earlier debut if business momentum remains strong.
Ferial emphasized that the IPO serves as a strategic milestone for future financing rather than a final destination. She noted that OpenAI’s recent $12.2 billion funding round provides ample resources to support ongoing business expansion and operational growth.

OpenAI filed its IPO prospectus confidentially with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in June, though a specific listing date has not yet been disclosed. Meanwhile, rival Anthropic has also submitted confidential documents and engaged in preliminary discussions with potential investors to gauge market sentiment.
Ferial stated that OpenAI will advance its listing strategy on its own timeline, independent of competitors’ actions. She revealed that while both firms have completed confidential filings, Anthropic may soon declassify its documents and could potentially go public as early as September.
As the generative AI sector accelerates toward commercialization, leading firms are bolstering their computing infrastructure and R&D through strategic financing and public offerings. The rivalry between OpenAI and Anthropic in model performance, enterprise solutions, and market valuation will be a key indicator of the AI industry’s future trajectory.
